The Magnum Spill Buster is an automated free phase petroleum contamination pumping system. It is specifically designed to remove NAPL petroleum product from the water table via a 2" or larger diameter well. Its unique auto-seeking device allows the pump intake to automatically follow the elevation of the oil/water interface as it fluctuates throughout the entire length of the well. This product will not pump any amount of water.

The system can be wired to 115 VAC or 230 VAC power or is capable of true 24 VDC deep cycle batteries/solar panel operation for remote site locations.

The control box coordinates and displays the condition of the system operation. The control box also allows certain system parameters to be varied and provides an RS-485 communications port for connection to up to 256 other units and a personal computer (PC) up to 3,000 ft. away.

The auto seeker is a small, motorized, reel assembly installed on the wellhead. It automatically raises and lowers the probe to follow the NAPL interface through the entire depth of the well. This makes the system operation highly efficient even with large changes in the level of the ground water. The cable fully winds onto the auto seeker, allowing the system to freely operate in a vault as small as 24" x 24" x 22" deep.

Recovery Probe

This self-winding feature also means that routine maintenance of the product pump is a matter of pushing a button to reel the probe to the top of the wellhead- eliminating the need to haul an oil-covered cable up by hand to spread out all over the ground.

The 1.93" diameter recovery probe contains a small but powerful 12vdc electric product pump, as well as the patented ALPHA-ARRAY interface sensors. These are multiple field array, all solid state, monolithic, non-contact, fluid-interface sensors that are a spin-off of spacecraft fuel gauging developed for NASA. The use of this interface sensor in the environmental industry is unique. Since it is a non-contact sensor, it is highly immune to fouling, which is a problem with virtually all other types of sensing methods (including conductive, float, optical and even radio frequency methods).

The Automatic Process

When the system is turned on in automatic mode, the Control Box signals the Auto Seeker to lower the Probe/pump into the well until the sensors find the interface. The Auto Seeker will then adjust the position of the Probe to bring the pump inlet slot just into the product layer. The pump is then activated and pumps down the available product until the water level rises to the pump inlet. This shuts down the pump, and the Auto Seeker will again adjust the position of the Probe to bring the pump back inside the product layer. The system will continue until all available free product is removed and the pump inlet is in the air.

The Magnum will then go into a "wait" mode of twenty minutes before again seeking the product/water interface. If there is still no available product, the Magnum will start another "wait" period of forty minutes before seeking product. It will continue to double the length of the wait period if no available product is found until it achieves balance with the product recharge rate, or reaches a six hour maximum.

If noise, fumes, and a noticeable profile will pose problems because of your site's proximity to pedestrian or vehicle traffic, or to residences and other businesses, you will want to compare the Magnum to your other technology options. The Magnum operates virtually noiseless. There are no noisy air compressors or external motors.

The product exits the well inside the discharge tubing and runs directly into your tank or barrel via a bung, minimizing fumes. Also, the fact that maintenance on the pump is accomplished by automatically winding the down-well tubing onto the Auto Seeker to raise the pump to the surface- instead of hauling the tubing up by hand and spreading it out on the ground- greatly reduces the smell (and mess).

The compact control panel can be mounted unobtrusively on the side of a building. The Auto Seeker raises the profile of the well head by two feet. It can be easily covered by a small enclosure if desired. Or, it can fit inside a small underground vault (24"x22"x22") to allow traffic to pass right over it. This is the extent of the system's visual "footprint".

Cost Effectiveness

The Magnum's operation is automatic- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 4 seasons of the year (through a temperature range of-40 to +60 degrees C). It requires minimal supervision- especially useful for remote site locations.

Minimisation of the use of resources

In addition to the pounds you save on labour and extraneous equipment over the life of your project, the Magnum also saves money and resources through its energy efficient operation.

The Magnum uses less power than a 60 watt bulb. It times its operation to the recharge rate of the well so that it only pumps when there is accumulated product.

Environmental benefits of the use of the product or service

Because no water will be pumped with the NAPL, in many cases the recovered product can be recycled and re-used.

Once the Magnum has finished its work on your site, the affected groundwater can be treated in situ or left to the work of natural attenuation to complete the removal of the final sheen.

Installation can take one person as little as twenty minutes because the system is completely modular and, except for connection to your power source, includes all you need to start pumping immediately.
